Bahay Kubo

Bahay kubo,
kahit munti

Ang halaman doon,
ay sari sari

Sinkamas at talong,
sigarilyas at mani

Sitaw, bataw, patani.

Kundol, patola,
upo't kalabasa

At saka mayroon pang
labanos, mustasa,

Sibuyas, kamatis,
bawang at luya

Sa paligid-ligid
ay puno ng linga.

"Bahay Kubo" is a Tagalog children's folk song. It tells the story of the abundant vegetation gowing around a little "nipa hut," the Filipino bent house. A nipa hut uses nipa (palm) leaves for its roof while the frame is built out of bamboo. While the nipa hut is immortalized by the song, today's rural Filipinos seldom use nipa leaves for their hut. It has been commonly replaced by galvanized iron sheets.
